Welcome to another episode of DoPodcaster The Done For You Podcast, where we focus on empowering small to medium-sized businesses through the art of podcasting. Today we’re diving into something that could transform your business—and I mean transform. We’re talking about why starting a bite-sized audio podcast right now is like investing in Bitcoin back in 2012 or starting a blog in 2004. Trust me, this is going to be monumental. And to help me unpack this goldmine of an opportunity, I’m joined by marketing expert and podcasting advocate, Margot Simmons. Margot, welcome to the show!
Margot:
Thanks, Howard; I’m thrilled to be here. I’m excited to talk about this because podcasting is hands down the most underrated opportunity for small businesses today. This is such an exhilarating time to talk about podcasting, especially for small businesses. The parallels are striking; podcasting today is really where blogging was in the early 2000s or Bitcoin in 2012—full of immense potential and yet, surprisingly, not as saturated.
Howard:
You’re making a bold comparison here—podcasting to Bitcoin and early blogging. Break that down for us. Why is podcasting that big of an opportunity right now?
Margot:
Okay Howard. So, let’s start with some context. Back in 2004, blogs were just starting to take off. If you launched a blog back then, you were in a prime position to dominate your niche because there wasn’t much competition. Fast forward to today, and there are 1 billion blogs—that’s one blog for every eight people on the planet. Now, compare that to podcasts. Right now, there are only 4.2 million podcasts. That’s one podcast for every 1,900 people. The demand for podcasts is massive, but the supply is incredibly low compared to blogs. So, if you start a podcast now, you’re basically staking your claim in a space that’s still wide open. And the best part? Podcasts create a personal connection that blogs just can’t.
Howard:
I love that comparison. It really puts the opportunity into perspective. But let’s address the elephant in the room—aren’t podcasts already oversaturated? It feels like everyone and their dog has a podcast these days.
Margot:
It might feel that way, but the numbers tell a different story. Yes, there are some big players in podcasting, but the reality is that most businesses—especially small ones—haven’t tapped into it yet. Here’s why that’s a mistake: podcasts let you connect with your audience on a whole new level. When people hear your voice, they feel like they know you. That builds trust, and trust leads to loyalty. And let’s not forget—people can listen to podcasts while they’re driving, walking, working out… things they can’t do with blogs or videos. So, no, podcasting is far from saturated. In fact, I’d say it’s still in its early days.
Howard:
That’s a great point. Let’s talk about the practical side. If someone’s listening right now and thinking, “Okay, I’m sold on the idea, but I have no idea where to start,” what would you tell them?
Margot:
Keep it simple. You don’t need a fancy studio or expensive equipment to start. And with the Do Podcaster team you don’t need anything, it’s all done-for-you. Here’s what you do: Decide on your niche. Speak about topics your audience cares about. It’s that simple. Keep episodes short—5 to 15 minutes max. People love bite-sized content they can consume on the go. Be consistent. To keep your audience engaged, you’ll need to publish an episode each week. stick to a schedule so your audience knows when to expect new episodes. And remember, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about being authentic. Offer valuable tips, suggestions and solutions that speak directly to your audience’s needs.

I love that advice. Okay, let’s get into the benefits. You’ve mentioned being on topic with tips and solutions to your audience’s problems. You also stressed how important being consistent is. What else makes podcasting such a powerful tool for small businesses?
Margot:
Great question. Aside from building trust, podcasts are incredible for increasing your digital presence. I call it “search everywhere optimization.” When you launch a podcast, your content appears on platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts—places where your competitors probably aren’t. Plus, podcasts help you stand out from the crowd. While most businesses are still focused on blogs or social media, you’re carving out a unique space in your audience’s ears. And here’s the kicker: tech giants haven’t dominated podcasting like they have with search and social media. For now, it’s still a level playing field.
Howard:
That’s a great point. So, what about people who say, “I don’t have time to start a podcast” or “I don’t have anything interesting to say”? How do you respond to that?
Margot:
I hear this all the time. First, you do have time. You know better than anyone, Howard. Take this podcast. How much time does the Do Podcaster podcast take to produce?
Howard:
